SHE (Scheme for Her Empowerment in Engineering Education), is an initiative aimed at enhancing the technical talent of women and is being implemented in engineering and polytechnic colleges across the State. The project aims to bring the representation of women in the field of higher technology studies to various technical career fields. Those who are currently pursuing engineering education; women who like to enroll in engineering programmes; and those who are employed in the engineering sector can participate in the programme.
Statistically, the presence of women in technology studies in Kerala is much higher than the national average. But this representation is not reflected in careers that require engineering skills. It was in this context that the SHE project was formed. The project was started with the vision that women should reach leadership positions according to technological growth.
The pilot project was started in 2020 at the Govt. college of engineering, Kannur. This became successful and led to the extension of the scheme to all institutions under the Department of Technical Education. Training programmes, interactions with experts, and mentorship initiatives will be part of the scheme. Through these, the project can create an organic environment for women empowerment, increase awareness about job opportunities and advanced technologies, and enable women engineers to take on the challenges that are emerging in the field of work.
