The Kuttamperoor river, which had remained stagnant for over 25 years due to garbage dumping, has been given a new lease of life. The river runs from Ulunthi in Achankovil to Illimala in Pampa. The restoration was made possible with the help of ₹15.70 crore funds provided by NABARD under the Employment Guarantee Scheme, led by the Harita Keralam Mission. In 2013, Budhanoor panchayat initiated efforts to restore the river, which eventually led to its successful revitalization.
The renovation work of the 7.5 km long river, which runs along the border of Mannar, Chennithala, and Budhanoor Panchayats, was completed in three phases. 1,300 workers under the Employment Guarantee Scheme from Budhanoor panchayat completed the project, creating 39,000 workdays in just 30 days. The renovation work led to the complete restoration of water flow in the Kuttamperoor river. The rejuvenation involved building bund roads, bunds with coir bhoovasthra, bathing ghats, and canals connected to the agricultural sector.
