The Local Self-Government Department has revised the reward system for individuals who report instances of illegal garbage dumping. Those who provide credible evidence will now receive one-fourth of the fine imposed on the offenders. Previously, the reward amount was capped at ₹2,500. This change is aimed at encouraging greater public participation in curbing illegal waste disposal in public spaces. Complaints can be registered by sending photos or videos via WhatsApp to the department’s single helpline number: 9446700800.
Currently, individuals and institutions found dumping or burning waste may face fines of up to ₹5,000. Discharging sewage into public places or water bodies can attract penalties ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹50,000. Dumping garbage, waste, or excreta into water bodies is a serious offence, punishable with a fine of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 and imprisonment from six months to one year. Selling banned plastic items also carries a fine of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000. Additionally, vehicles used for the illegal transportation of waste or excreta are subject to seizure and confiscation.
