Clean-Green Kalolsavam: Over 17,200 kg of Organic Waste Collected

The 63rd Kerala School Kalolsavam has set a new standard in sustainability, becoming a waste-free Kalolsavam as part of Kerala's broader goal for a clean and sustainable future. By adhering to the green protocol and promoting litter-free practices, the festival emerged as a model for environmental responsibility. A comprehensive waste management system was put in place, including 35 bottle booths, 300 bins for plastic waste, 300 small bins for paper, 100 bins for sanitary waste, and 26 awareness boards to guide the public. Two stalls at the Central Stadium and Putharikandam facilitated waste collection, which are installed for this purpose.

The efforts of the Harithakarmsena members, alongside 55 NSS volunteers, were influential in maintaining cleanliness across the venues. Their hard work has resulted in the collection of significant amounts of waste, including 17,200.6 kg of organic waste, 2812 kg of inorganic waste, and 64.6 kg of medical waste.

Scientific WasteWater Treatment Methods

The municipality and the Suchitwa Mission have implemented a scientific approach to treat the wastewater generated by the festival's cafeteria. A mobile treatment unit, capable of processing up to 60,000 litres of wastewater per day, has been deployed to handle the wastewater effectively. The wastewater first undergoes separation from oil and wax through an oil/grease trap before being sent to the solid/water separation unit of the mobile unit, where solid waste is removed.

Following this, the wastewater is passed through a series of filtration processes, including sand filters, carbon filters, micro filters, and ultrafilters, to remove impurities. Finally, chlorine is removed to ensure that the treated water is free from harmful germs and odour. This purified water is then safely discharged. The Green Protocol Committee keeps track of the entire water treatment process, ensuring that it meets the highest environmental standards.
