IT @ School Project

About the Department IT@School is a project of Department of General Education, Government of Kerala, setup in 2001, to foster the ICT (Information Communication Technology) enabled education in schools in the state.The Project is now been implemented from 5th to 12th Standards in the State covering as many as 12,000 schools. An estimated 50 lakhs students and 2 lakhs teachers are now part of this project who have benefited from ICT enabled education. The Project functions through a strong network of 160 Master Trainers and 5600 School IT Co-ordinators statewide, who are school teachers themselves attached to the Project on working arrangement. In order to support the teachers in ICT related activities, the Project has also empowered 28,000 students as Student School IT Co-ordinators (SSITCs). The Project functions entirely on FOSS platform (Free and Open Source Software) since it provides the freedom to an individual to study, copy, modify and re-distribute any content, a process which would ultimately benefit the whole society. The Project aims to empower all the school teachers in the state on ICT tools, making them IT champions and also to implement ICT enabled learning system for all subjects. The project in association with BSNL has provided Internet broad band connectivity to all high schools in Kerala, which would be upgraded to VPN Connectivity this year. Apart from infrastructure deployment to schools, the Project also ensures the proper maintenance of hardware equipments at schools through Hardware Clinics and reporting of faulty machines online through a webportal and 24 hour service call center in association with KELTRON. Being the nodal agency of General Education department for e-governance, almost all the functions of the department has been automated by the ProjectIT@School is the nodal agency for implementing EDUSAT network and runs an exclusive channel for education called ViCTERS (Virtual Classroom Technology on Edusat for Rural Schools), which is aired for 17 hours a day- from 6am to 11pm. The success of the Project can be visualised by the conduct IT practical examination in free software for about 4 million students, first of this kind in the world with so much vast resourceful deployment of free software. The efforts of Project saw deployment of adequate IT infrastructure to all schools including computers and other accessories. Today, the Project is termed as the "Single largest simultaneous deployment of FOSS based ICT education in the world." Vision & Mission
