Entered politics through students movement.  Was Secretary (1958-59) and Chairman (1959-60) of College Union, Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur; Magazine Editor, Law College, Ernakulam;  District Secretary of the undivided Congress (1967-1969).

Taking active part in religious, cultural and social activities.  Served as Member, N.S.S. Director Board (1975-1984);   General Secretary, N.D.P. (1978-1984);  Chairman, N.D.P. (1984-1986);  Member, A.I.C.C.

Associated with literary movement for the last 40 years.  Was Member, Library Control Board; Secretary, Thrissur Public Library; President, District Library, Thrissur;  General Secretary, Kerala Bar Federation;  Executive Committee Member, Kerala Agricultural University;  Member, Calicut University Senate;  Legal Advisor in various Institutions and Banks;  President, Thrissur District Printing and Publishing Co-operative Society (Kairali);  Manager, Vivekodayam Boys and Girls Higher Secondary School, Thrissur.

Was Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly from 27th June 1995 to 28th May 1996 and from 16th September  2004 to 23rd May 2006.

Was delegate to the 41st Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference held in Colombo in 1995 and 51st C.P.A.        Conference at Nadu, Fiji Island; Was Chairman, Committee on Official Languages (2002-2004) and Committee on Papers Laid on the Table (1998-2001) of the Legislative Assembly.

Now, Deputy Leader, Congress Legislative Party.

Previously elected to K.L.A. in 1982, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006.
