Jeevan Raksha Padak Awards for six Keralites
Jeevan Raksha Padak Awards were announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs for the year 2011. This year’s award will be given to Smt. K. Sathi from Cheruvathur, Kasaragod, Sri. Afif Baker from Ottappalam, Palakkad, Sri. Kathirummal Thampan from Thrikkarippur, Kasaragod, Smt. P. M Jismi from Perinjeri, Thrissur, Raj Narayanan from Kuttanad, Alappuzha and Sri. K. Vishnudas from Ottappalam, Palakkad. The award will be disbursed on 15 August during the Independence Day celebrations.
Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards, an offshoot of the Ashoka Chakra series of Gallantry awards, were instituted in the year 1961. As the name of the award suggests, the award is given to a person for saving someone’s life. The award is given for a meritorious act of human nature in saving the life of a person in cases like drowning, accidents, fire incidents, electrocution, natural calamities, rescue operation in mines etc. It is given in three categories: -
i) Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak is awarded for conspicuous courage in saving life under circumstances of very great danger to the life of the rescuer.
ii) Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak is awarded for courage and promptitude in saving life under circumstances of great danger to the life of the rescuer and
iii) Jeevan Raksha Padak is awarded for courage and promptitude in saving life under circumstances of grave bodily injury to the rescuer.
