The
colleges in the state started functioning from 1th
June during the Academic year 2002-2003. The academic
and extra curriculum achievements of some of the Government
Colleges are given below:
Institutions
There
are 186 Arts and science Colleges. 38 Government College
and 148 Private Colleges, 21 Training Colleges (4 Govt &
17 Private Colleges.) 3 Music colleges, 1 Physical Education
college and 11 Arabic Colleges under the control of the
Director of Collegiate Education.
The
courses of studies offered in the arts and Science Colleges
are:

Graduate Courses of MA, M.Sc and M.Com of 2 year
duration.

Degree
course of BA, B.Sc and B.Com of the 3 years duration
with different optional subject.

ACADEMIC
ACHIEVEMENTS
1.
Maharajas College, Ernakulam
The
college had presented 489 students at degree level and 260
students at post graduate level for the University Examination.
3911 students passed for degree and 197 students passed
for post graduate. The average pass percentage were 80
and 75 respectively.
2.
Government College, Attingal
The
college has presented 146 students for degree examination
and 33 students for post graduate examination conducted
by Kerala University 2002-2003. The college had secured
1st Rank in communicative English with distinction.
100 students has passed for degree course and 26 students
have passed for post graduate course. The percentage of
examination result were 68.49 and 78.78 respectively.
3.
Government College, Nedumangad
176
students at degree level and 24 students post graduate level
were presented for the University Examination 02-03. 115
students were passed for degree and 22 students were passed
for post graduate examination. The percentage of pass being
65.34 and 9.60 respectively.
4.
Govt. Victoria College, Palakkad
Govt.
Victoria college, Palakkad had presented 405 students at
degree level and 128 students at post graduate level for
the University examination for 01-02. 345 students passed
for degree and 126 students posed for post graduate examination.
The percentage of examination result was 85.18 and 98.43
respectively. The college had secure I Rank and II nd Rank
for BA examination and Ist II nd IIIrd Rank for BSc Examination.

5.
Govt. Arts & Science College, Kozhikode
The
college had presented 353 students for degree and 64 for
students for post graduate in the University examination
for the year 02-03. 291 students passed for degree examination
and 47 students passed for post graduate examination. The
average pass percentage were 82.4 and 73.6 respectively.
The college had secure II nd Rank and III rd Rank in MA
Hindi.
ACHIEVEMENT
IN SPORTS AND GAMES
1.
Govt. College, Chittur
From
the beginning of this academic year regular practices sports
and games were started. The sports and game which regularly
practiced in this college are Athletics, cross country,
Football, Kabaddi, Kho-kho, Handball, Softball, cricket,
Table Tennis, Shuttle Badminton, Swimming, Judo,and Wrestling
etc.
College
athletic team participated in the Calicut athletic meet
2002-03. Mr. Richard Scaria of Ist MA Geography won the
gold meddle in 400 Mts Race and Lijith. V. of IIIrd BA
Geography won the silver meddle in the long jump.
Cross
country men team won the gold meddle in the Calicut University
cross country champion ship 2002-03. Kho-Kho men team won
the IIIrd place in the calicut University Kho-Kho championship
02-03. Mr. Manoj III rd BSc Electronics won the IIIrd place
in the Calicut University Judo champion ship 02-03.
2.
Govt. College, Madappally
The
College Volleyball, Basketball, Football, Cricket, Hockey,
Boxing, and Table Tennis teams have participated in the
Calicut University Inter Collegiate Tournament. Racing
against all odds, The college men volley ball team became
winners in the Calicut University Volleyball Championship.
Siraj. U.K. IIIrd BA Economics Vijesh. M. III rd BA History
have been selected to university volleyball team. The College
Kabadi team secured Ist place in the A Zone Inter Collegiate
Kabadi team.
3.
Govt.College, Kattappana
Babu
Varghese of Govt. College, Kattappana which won the Ist
place in the MG University Inter Collegiate Body Building
competition in 60 K.G. Category for the year 02-03. Arun
Mathew represented the Idukki District youth volleyball
team, Cyril Zacharia represented the Idukki District Cricket
team.
N.C.C.in
Government Colleges
The
details regarding the NCC units in Govt.Colleges together
with the number of Cadets
in each units are given in appendix. The reports received
from the colleges shown that the NCC. Units
were very active during the Academic year. In certain
colleges NCC units are not functioning as there were no
teacher who were willing actt as NCC Officer. The delinking
of PDC courses from the colleges has adversely affected
the enrollment of cadets.
1.
Government College, Attingal
The
NCC Sub unit of this College is functioning under I(K)
BN NCC, Varkala. The sub unit Consist of two companies,
of senior division NCC cadets. The sanctioned strength
and enrollment strength is 320. The delinking of PDC courses
from the college has adversely affected the enrollment
of cadets and to compensate it 150 Higher Secondary students
of nearly Higher Secondary Scholl have enrolled with our
sub unit in accordance with the guidance issued by the Directorate
of NCC.
One
cadets each attend the All India Leader Ship Camp held at
Chennai and Talsainik leadership held at New Delhi.5 Cadets
participated in the National Integration Camp held at Palakkad
from 20,12,2002 to 30,12,2002.
2.
Govt.College, Manimalakunnu
The
NCC unit comprises a company of SD-Army-Boys with a total
strength of 98 cadets. The unit is affiliated to 18th
(Bn) NCC Muvattupuzha under Kottayam group.
This
year the unit started functioning from September 2002 and
completed all training periods including firing practice
by the Ist Week of February 2003.
The
parade were conducted from 9 A.M. to 3. P.M. hours on all
Saturdays. This year three cadets participated in National
Integration Camp at Assam two cadets participated in NIC
at Kollam. One cadets participated in NIC at Indore and
22 cadets attended ATC at Thiruvalla. A total of 17 cadets
appeared for B, and five cadets appeared fro C, certificate
examination. The Unit celebrated NCC day Independence day
Republic day in befitting manner.
3.
Govt.College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram
It
is a great pleasure to put on record the marvelous and hectic
activities of the NCC Wing of the college during the academic
year 02-03. As usual the year was marked with the whole
hearted participation of cadets in nationally organised
National Inauguration Camp, Annual Training Camp Adventure
Camp like Rock climbing, Trekking, Sailing, Para jumping,
Shooting Republic Celebration Camp etc. It is credit our
college that our cadets have brought to the institution
the Ever rolling Trophy for the best NCC performance in
the year. They also won the Championship trophy for the
cultural programme and Drill completion. Neethu. . P.V.
won the Governors gold medal and u/o Sindhu won Governors
Silver medal for there performance in the inter group competition.
About 5 to 6 cadets from the college attended the Thalasena
leader ship camp state level competition held at Kozhikode.
Out cadets are forefront in Blood donation campaign Eye
donation pledge, activities Red Cross society Polio eradication
campaign volunteer service in local, state and National
Celebration etc. In the certificate examination of B and
C largest number of participants came from this troop.
4.
Govt.College, Kasaragod
Our
NCC Units had 1 units with 53 cadets enrolled under 2/32
Kerala Bn, Payyannur. The NCC unit had participated in
the independence day parade on 15.8.02 at the Municipal
Stadium, Kasargod. After completing the enrollment of the
cadets, we conducted on open ceremony parade on 7.9.02 .
There after on on every Saturday there was routine parades.
On 5th October in connection with Gandhi Jayanthi
Celebration was actively participated in a cleaning program
near the Kasargod Railway Station. Our work was greatly
appreciated by the Chairman, Kasaragod Municipality. We
clean surrounding of the Science Block in other Campus.
All the works were supervised PI staff from the NCC office.
On 26th January 2003 we participated in the Republic
Parade at the Municipal Stadium , Kasaragod. Among college
wing, we got the best college wing Trophy. The closing
ceremony was on 30.1.2003. Our Principal Inaugurated functions.
That was last function of the NCC wing of our college during
academic year 2002-03.
5.
Govt. College, Kalpetta
An
NCC unit attached to 31(K)Bn NCC, Kannur is functioning
in this college with strength of 160 cadets. The NCC cadets
are participating all the district level programme conducted
by the district activities. Moreover the unit here placed
second in the district level Republic and Independence parade.
National
Service Scheme -State Level Cell
National
Service Scheme- State Level Cell located in the Directorate
started functioning with the financial assistance of Government
of India. The State Level Cell is set up by the Government
of Kerala to attend the work relating the NSS, such as timely
release of NSS grants, convening meeting of the State Advisory
Committee, sending periodical reports to Government of India
and planning State Level NSS Programme.
National
Service Scheme in Government Colleges
1.
Govt.College, Attingal
The
regular activities of NSS of Govt. College Attingal units
have started during Ist week of June itself. The main activities
involved are campus cleaning regular meeting, of volunteers
discussion, blood donation campaign, Blood donation etc.
The programme officer attend several meeting in connection
with the supplementation of greening the state programme.
Greening
the state programme enthusiastically implemented in campus
and in the N.H 47 from Korani, to Alamkode. The participation
of the leaders of Municipality and surrounding Panchayat,
students, NSS volunteers voluntary organisation and general
public was ensured in the programme. It was grand success
so far as this campus concerned.
2.
K.K.T.M. Govt. College, Pullut
The
principal, Prof. P. Ravindran formally inaugurated the activities
of NSS during the academic year on 22nd July
2002. An additional Unit was sanctioned this year. Dr.
Harikumar, programme officer, NSS, MES Asmabi College, Vemballor
inaugurated a new unit and delivered a lecturer in the
context of orientation.
During
the month of July and August, Chairman of Kodungalloor,
Municipality inaugurated the planting of the crops on 9.8.02.
Afterwards planting was done in many chosen areas of the
Municipality. These seedling are even now carefully natured.
In connection with celebration of Onam festival competition
in arts were arranged and the winners were given prices.
As part of Independence Celebration 15.8.2002 cleaning of
the campus was done and the seminar on the evils of of growing
communalism was conducted which was very illuminating .
In the interest of service two one day campus were arranged,
the first on 7.9.2002 and the next on 14.9.2002.
3. Govt.
College, Nedumangad
There
are 2 units working in the college. 250 volunteers are
participating in the activities. 100 new NSS volunteers
were enrolled during the year 02-03. In major activities
for the year 02-03 were the following.

15 – Independence Day Celebration.

2 – Savanadinam.Cleaning the Anand Ayurveda Hospital
Campus wards.250 volunteers participated.

Orientation
programme for NSS volunteers on October 30 at college
level.

awareness programme on November 30.

Anti
Drug Tobacco awareness seminar on December 18.
-
One
day seminar on PNDT Act on December 15.
-
Deputation
of NSS volunteers of National Youth Festival at Thiruvananthapuram
on Jan. 02.
-
Painting
competition about AIDS awareness on February 20, 2003.

Govt. College, Kottayam
The
NSS Units of our college has 4 units. Each unit has 100
volunteers and one programme officer. The , Principal,
Govt, College, Kottayam formerly inaugurated the NSS activities
for the year 02-03 on 9.8.2002. On August 15 at 8.30 A.M.
the National Flag was hoisted by the programme officer.
The National Integration Pledge was taken by NSS volunteers
after that seminar was conducted. Two day Mini Camp conducted
on 14th and 15th of September 02 at
Government College, Kottayam. The main project was the
cleaning of college campus and sapling plantation. There
were 200 NSS volunteers participated in mini camps.
5.
Govt. College Munnar
NSS
Unit having strength of 100 volunteers. The unit has actively
participated in the regular activities especially the state
gracing programme announced by the Government of Kerala
during September- 2002. Many programme were conducted by
the units for AIDS awareness sponsored by the State NSS
Regional Centre. Few programmes for the personality development
for the students are also conducted.
Administration
of Music, Training and Physical Education Colleges
1.
Training Colleges
There
are 21 Training Colleges(4 Govt.and 17 Private Colleges).
The Institutions under the public sector are under the direct
Administration Control of the Department.
2.
Music College
There
are 3 Music colleges in the state at Thiruvananthapuram,
Tripunithura and Palakkad with student’s strength of about
814 (Thiruvananthapuram 172, Tripunithura 472 and Palakkad
170). The major courses offered and Natana Bhooshanam, Gana
Bhooshanam, Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathakalivisham,
Kathakali sangeetham, Diploma in Fine Arts etc.
3.
Physical Education Colleges
Two
years higher certificate course in Physical Education is
offered in the Physical Education College, Kozhikode.

Administration
of Private Colleges
The
number of Private Colleges in the State have increased from
104 at the time of introduction of Direct Payment system
in 1972 to 1974 in 2002-03 There private colleges were
brought under the control of 5 zonal Directors of the department
as detailed.

Deputy Directors of the department have to disburse the
salaries of teaching and non teaching staff, arrange for
the payment of grant and audit the accounts of the institutions
under their jurisdiction.
